ストレスに強い人は、この雨の種類を予測して、それに合った傘を巧みに使い分ける。にわか雨には折りたたみ傘、パラパラ雨にはビニール傘、豪雨の時には骨組みの太い傘、暴風雨で傘が役立たない時はレインコート、そんな具合にいくつもの傘を取捨選択して、人生の雨の中を歩き抜く。

　この傘の役目を担うのが、元気になる力だ。

　おそらく多くの人は、「ストレスに強い人」と聞いて、

・意志の強い人
・鈍感な人
・楽観的な人
・ポジティブに物事を考える人
・我を通す人
・自信のある人
・行動力のある人
・目標のある人

　などを思い浮かべることだろう。これらはすべてが元気になる力（＝傘）で、雨しのぎに大いに役立つ。

　だが、実はいちばん大きくて頑丈な傘は、信頼できる他人の力を借りること。自分の傘が折れてしまった時には、他人の傘が役に立つ。実証研究でも、ストレスに対処する能力の高い人の多くが、信頼できる傘を持っていることが明らかになっている。他人の傘を見つけることさえできれば、自分の傘を持てない人もストレスの雨に濡れずにすむ。元気になる力は、自分だけで準備するのではなく、他人からも借りられるものなのだ。
